Position Description Details:

Overview - The Tourism Director will serve as the leader of the Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau (CVVB), which is a division of the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation and serves as a new destination marketing organization operating as part of an integrated economic development agency.

Reports To - The Tourism Director reports to the President/Executive Director of the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation and to an independent Tourism Bureau Board that will be directly charged with establishing the strategy, budget, and operational priorities of the tourism program.

Responsibilities:

> Overall responsibility for CVVB sales and marketing efforts to attract individual and group travelers to visit and stay in the service area.

> Maintain a strategic commitment to the four core objectives of the CVVB which are (1) development of the service area's assets as strong destination offerings, (2) promoting proximity to nationally recognized attractions in a manner that encourages regional visitors to stay in the CVVB service area, (3) identification and pursuit of regional tourism development opportunities that related to the CVVB's core objectives, and (4) integration of tourism marketing with community enhancement and economic development programs.

> Work in conjunction with the President/Executive Director to establish and achieve performance management benchmarking objectives for tourism and visitor development.

> Provide direct supervision of marketing, branding, advertising, trade show, and public relations programs and activities.

> Prepare annual tourism operations plan and budget for review by President/Executive Director and approval by the Tourism Bureau Board and actively maintain strong engagement with the Board on activities and agency achievements.

> Manage the team of staff professionals within the tourism group who will focus on group/event sales, destination development, and regional/cooperative marketing initiatives.

> Stay abreast of guidelines, requirements, and public policy issues impacting tourism agency operations and develop strong ties with the Pennsylvania State Tourism Office and other tourism promotion agencies (TPAs) serving the region, in order to ensure a strong professional position for the CVVB in regard to state programs, initiatives, grants, and other cooperative opportunities.

> Participate and maintain membership in local, state, regional, and national organizations as appropriate and provide active leadership and visibility for the CVVB within the industry.

The Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau, a division of the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation, seeks to retain the services of a proven tourism agency executive to lead the new Cumberland Valley Visitors Bureau, a start-up destination marketing organization located in South-Central Pennsylvania.

The Tourism Director will report to the President/Executive Director of the Economic Development Corporation and will work in conjunction with a dedicated Tourism Bureau Board to implement strategy and a plan of work. The agency primarily serves Cumberland County, PA, which is a growing, historically-rooted community located within a short distance to such nationally recognized destinations as Hershey, Gettysburg, and Lancaster and within the Northeast Corridor destination marketplace.

The agency is an independent, county-chartered corporation charged with providing tourism promotion; group and event sales; destination development; and cooperative marketing with other tourism agencies in the region within the context of an integrated economic development strategy. Qualified candidates will possess strong leadership credentials and 5-7 years of experience in the tourism promotion, destination marketing, historical tourism, or convention and visitor services fields, with 2-3 years of executive (president or vice president) experience in a tourism agency environment or equivalent expertise in managing tourism programs. Core competencies will include expertise in destination marketing; lodging industry operations; tourism economic development; grant research and writing; heritage tourism; and media strategy. Experience with Pennsylvania state tourism programs may be a plus. Compensation DOQ.
